PRIVATE OUTDOOR LEAD CLIMBING WORKSHOP
Take Your Climbing From Gym to Real Rock — Safely
Learn the skills and systems you need to sport climb outdoors with confidence, in a private group led by qualified climbing guides.
Small groups • Qualified guides • All gear provided
Is This Workshop for You?
This workshop is designed for climbers who are ready to take the next step beyond the gym.
You already climb indoors (boulder or top rope)
- ✔ You want to start climbing outdoors but don’t know where to begin
- ✔ You want to learn proper anchor and rope systems, not just “wing it”
You want to climb real rock with confidence and good habits from the start
This workshop is not suitable for complete beginners with no indoor climbing experience.
How the Workshop Works
The workshop is split into two parts to make sure you’re fully prepared before heading outdoors.
PART 1 — INDOOR SAFETY & SKILLS SESSION (Approx. 2 Hours)
At our indoor climbing facility, you’ll learn and practise the core skills needed for outdoor lead climbing, including:
- Anchors and basic anchor principles
- Rope management and safe systems
- Lead belaying and clipping techniques
- Partner checks and communication
- Common mistakes and how to avoid them
This session allows you to learn and practise in a controlled environment before applying the skills on real rock.
PART 2 — OUTDOOR CLIMBING DAY (Full Day at Glass House Mountains)
Once you’re comfortable with the systems, we head outdoors to the spectacular Glass House Mountains to put everything into practice.
You’ll cover:
- Sport climbing on real outdoor routes
- Anchor cleaning and lowering off
- Route reading and movement on rock
- Outdoor safety and crag etiquette
- How to climb efficiently and confidently outside
You’ll spend the day climbing, learning, and gaining real outdoor experience under the guidance of your instructor.
Why Learn Outdoors With a Qualified Guide?
Climbing outdoors is incredibly rewarding — but it also comes with higher consequences if systems are done incorrectly.
Learning with a qualified guide means:
- You learn correct, up-to-date techniques
- You build good habits from the start
- You can ask questions and get immediate feedback
- You reduce the risk of dangerous mistakes
- You gain confidence to climb independently in the future
Our goal isn’t just to take you climbing for the day — it’s to give you skills you can use safely long after the workshop is over.

Where You’ll Be Climbing
The indoor session will be held at On Belay Climbing in Burleigh Heads. This is a top rope and lead climbing facility setup to help you progress safely.
The outdoor component of the workshop takes place at selected sport climbing crags in the Glass House Mountains, one of South East Queensland’s most iconic climbing areas.
Routes are chosen based on:
- weather conditions
- group ability
- and learning objectives for the day
This allows us to tailor the experience to give you the best possible learning and climbing opportunities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to know how to lead climb already?
A: You should already be comfortable with indoor climbing and basic top rope belaying. Previous lead experience is helpful, but not necessary — this workshop is designed to teach you how to transition safely to outdoor sport climbing.
Q: What if the weather is bad?
A: If conditions are unsafe or unsuitable for outdoor climbing, the workshop may be rescheduled. We’ll always prioritise safety and will contact you if changes are needed.
Q: Is all equipment provided?
A: All group safety equipment and climbing hardware are provided. You’ll need your own personal gear such as shoes, harness, helmet, and chalk.
Q: How experienced or strong do I need to be as a climber?
A: You don’t need to be a strong or an advanced climber to join this workshop. If you can climb to the top of any route indoors — even the easiest boulder problem or top-rope climb at your local gym — that’s more than enough. We’ll choose outdoor routes that suit your ability and focus on learning skills, systems, and confidence rather than physical strength. This workshop is suitable for all abilities.
